In Honduras, Freedom Restored PDF Print E-mail

The story out of Honduras is that the people of that stalwart little country have now taken it into their own hands to preserve their democracy in the most courageous action since they established their constitutional republic nearly three decades ago. Just as former Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales prepared to seize full power in direct violation of the nation’s Constitution, the military leadership – with the backing of the people – removed him from power.

Unfortunately, Barack Obama, after encouraging the Zelaya coup with his complicit silence, has now condemned the people’s move to uphold their Constitution and preserve their freedom. And, as expected, the mainstream media has joined Mr. Obama in censuring the restoration of democracy by censoring the full story.

Yet, what actually occurred in Honduras is a case study in the survival of freedom against the most oppressive odds.

Earlier this year, in the face of strong public opposition, Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales declared that he would stage a referendum to have the country’s constitutional term limits law overturned, thereby allowing him to remain indefinitely in power. The people of Honduras had adopted the single, four-year--term limit as part of their Constitution in January of 1982. Significantly, the term limits provision is one of only eight “firm articles,” out of 375. By  law, cannot be amended.

The Supreme Court of Honduras declared the Zelaya referendum unconstitutional, his own Liberal Party came out in strong opposition, and the public overwhelmingly opposed his power grab. Despite this, Zelaya, a leftwing politician with strong ties to Cuba’s Castro and Venezuela’s Chavez, scheduled the referendum for Sunday, June 28. At midnight, Wednesday, June 24, the strong-arm president gave a televised speech accusing his opposition of promoting “destabilization and chaos” by attempting to thwart his unconstitutional referendum.

As the situation in Honduras continued to deteriorate, the Zelaya’s attorney general called for his ouster; his Defense Minister resigned; he fired the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for stating that he would refuse to send out troops to put down public protests; the chiefs of the army, navy, and air force resigned; and the country’s Supreme Court ordered the nation’s army and police not to support the unconstitutional referendum.

Through all of this, Barack Obama abetted the Zelaya power grab through his calculated silence. Yet, the brave people of Honduras – enduring almost unfathomable duress – stood firm in support of their Constitution and the term limits embodied in it.

Now that the will of the people has triumphed over tragedy, we believe the time has come for Mr. Obama to concede the defeat of his partner and policy, and for the U.S. media to support those who, putting principle above personal safety, have let freedom ring.  At ALG news, we applaud the Freedom Fighters of neighboring Honduras.

Well said!

This is the first international news to tell the truth about the situation in Honduras! We, the people of Honduras feel abandoned by the international community! We have just acted to defend our laws, our freedom, our democracy. No coup has taken place here, but a lawful destitution of a corrupt megalomaniac who used socialism as a crutch to support his ultimate goal of staying in power indefinitely under strict compliance of Chavez's so-called socialist franchise!

Long Live Dmocracy, Long Live our Freedom, long Live the Rule of Law.... Long Live The Republic of Honduras!

Also, let it be known that some of us are very very afraid right now!!!

We are very vulnerable at this moment, it is being said that Nicaraguan and Venezuelan troops are forming on our border to attack to restitute this tyrant! If we do not have the backing of other countries we will fall!

It would be so ironic that the first black president from the united states would let a friend revert to communist (a form of slavery). We desperately need help from the international community! Please change public opinion to prevent an attack!!

Truth about Honduras Situation
written by Carol Lagos, June 29, 2009
Please let the world know that all the Honduran people are proud of our authorities and armed forces, because they have been diligent in protecting our country, it´s constitution and democracy. Mel Zelaya was attempting against our democracy. Mel Zelaya and Hugo Chavez are full of lies. The world shall know the truth. We don´t understand why CNN is only publishing Zelaya´s version and not the Honduran people version. We have been told that people from other countries are entering the Honduran frontiers to support Zelaya´s plans.

Very well done and I am glad that you didn't mince words on Obama. Too many times writers are afraid to call it like they see it when it comes to Obama. Forget his maniacal fans. Obama is what he is: An aspiring socialist dictator. Nothing controversial about it. Just look at his track record.

I wanted to add that there is a typo you might want to edit:

"Unfortunately, Barak [Barack] Obama, after encouraging the Zelaya coup with his complicit silence, has now condemned the people’s move to uphold their Constitution and preserve their freedom."

Democracy in Honduras
written by adriana, June 29, 2009
Thank you sooo much! I understand the worlds gut reaction to condemn any event that has been referred to as a “Military Coup”. We, Hondurans, more than anyone strongly condemn such events as we have lived through various military coups in the past. However, the events that have transpired today were neither. Honduras has beat the odds... we are Chavez-socialism free and we did it legally.
I applaud your defense among the vast mayority of media.
Democracy has prevailed!!!

Thanks for this great article, You are talking we the truth, not like cnn and OEA that are talking out of content. Mel Zelaya and his gabinet had to be stopped and incarcerated, OEA, CNN before talking get your facts straight, you are harming our country. Remember we Hondurans are happy with todays outcast, take in consideration our point of view. Now we should be worried of an invasion from Chavez (venezuela) and Ortega (Nicatagua) and i dont see International Organizations condemning that. I pray my Lord, I serve a great God.....everything is going to be alright

He has to be in jail, he is a human right agressor. Please be our voice in your country, the United States should be worried about this situation, because chavez and fidel will have more power, remember USA you are going trough a terrible situation but if you have to see that letting chavez take control of honduras will only increase your calamity. As a Honduran citizen, I Thank You. Your portrayal of what is happening in my country is a breath of fresh air amidst what has been very a polarized coverage

What occurred today in my country was not a coup d’etat, but the application of justice towards a person who continually violated the law despite the fact that he was cautioned by the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, Congress, the Human Rights Commission, the Catholic and Christian Church and the Honduran Armed Forces, on numerous occasions to desist from the illegal actions he was promoting. So finally, on a day when Mr. Zelaya Rosales and his entire cabinet were committing the aforementioned felony and after disregarding all due legal processes, the Armed Forces, with the support of Honduran Law, proceeded in detaining him.

The international community does not know the fear and tension we hondurans have been living under. Mr. Zelaya, with his Chavez-like aspirations, has plunged this country into the worst political and economical crisis it has ever faced. Our freedom of speech and basic liberties were being threatened. His plundered the treasury for his own political aspirations and he ignored the poor people he had sworn to protect. So today, regardless of Hugo Chavez's threats to invade us, we are celebrating.

So I applaud you ALG News. Thank you so much for giving voice to what the majority of Hondurans want to express.

Long Live Honduras! Long live Democracy!

Regards,
Andrea H.

Honduras is in desperate need for international support, specially from the United States. Like many have already said, this is the first statement that has actually depicted the truth behind all the lies Mel Zelaya has thrown upon the world. Do not believe in him. Do not treat him as a victim, for his intentions are to remain in power and demolish the democracy in Honduras, which is stronger than ever. Hugo Chavez said he will attack Honduras in order to put Mel Zelaya back in power and we will defend our country with our lives. NO MATTER WHAT. We urge the U.S to support us, to support democracy. A message I sent earlier to CNN + another link to a good article
written by Alex, June 29, 2009
I want to share a reflexion I e-mailed to CNN earlier for you to know how most of the Hondurans feel about the news coverage and how the international community has been influenced by their reporting practices:
“As you can see from your footages, the minority of people are in favor of Mel Zelaya’s intentions of modifying the constitution to remain in power, following Hugo Chavez regime. Your interviews with Mel Zelaya are converting him in a martyr and the world is confused about his declarations and the intentions of the Honduran people. 90% of the Honduras are very happy that democracy, freedom, and sovereignty will prevail with Zelaya’s destitution and Congress naming a new president. We would like for you to interview current Government officials which were being obliged to vote in the poll Zelaya was promoting in order for them to keep their jobs. Zelaya’s abuse of authority can be well supported by these people and his corruption acts during all of his presidential term have basically left him almost alone in his fight against the “imperialists”… he has bought consciences and those are the few radicals that you see in your footages supporting him. Please avoid further declarations from Zelaya until you have a broader point of view of what really is happening to our country. We the Hondurans do not consider the military actions and the naming of a provisional president as a coup d’etat, we feel that it responds to the Honduran’s need to keep the institutional order and stop these corruption acts. I consider that CNN is responsible of doing investigative journalism and any biased coverage of news should be an alert for your prestigious company that corruption has made its way into your reporters. We urge you to analyze this issue because if this is not corrected you are promoting an international caos and playing on Hugo Chavez’s team.

In the following link you can find a picture of Zelaya as a young radical, for you to evaluate if he is a trustworthy source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39911285@N05/

This picture portrays Mel Zelaya’s early addiction to violence. Mel Zelaya (as puppet of Hugo Chavez) is not willing to give up and there are rumors that military forces from Venezuela based in Nicaragua are planning to invade Honduras because they do not recognize the new authorities of Honduras, that we the people are proud of, and he will do what it takes to impose this Marxist-Leninist regime led by Hugo Chavez.

Let´s analyze things for a minute
written by elizabeth, June 29, 2009
I definitly agree with Mel Zelaya being destituted, but i DO NO T AGREE WITH ROBERTO MICHELETTI BEING IN POWER....CMmon hondurans, how can you forget who tried to sale and privatize the biggest and wealthiest comopany in Honduras : it was roberto micheletti....In a few days, he did such thing, can you imagine what he will do in six months?? He will privatize the whole country , since he will get a large amount of money for doing so. He will sale our whole cuntry, he was a thief and he will be a thief....In the other hand let´s talk about Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, here we have a men who was blackmailed by Michletti, his head was at stake when he decided not to help manuel zelaya....If he helped Manuel Zelaya, his head was at stake. So here is the big part of the truth we leave out...And let´s not forget about elvin Santos, who is Micheletti´s puppet, and one of the most popular candidates for November´s elections, he is a fraud, so as micheletti....And let´s not forget about CESAR HAM WHO WAS MURDERED TODAY, FOR BEING ONE OF MANUEL ZELAYA´S SUPPORTERS,... ALSO THE EMBASSADORS WHO WERE KIDNAPPED, AND THAN AGRESSIVELY HEAT , AND LATER THROWN IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE....I do not agree with manuel zelaya´s dictatorship, in the other hand I do not agree either, with this violation of human rights !!

Thank you for your article. Is one of the very few around the world that has a more realistic view of what is really going on in Honduras than what the liberal international media circus is portraying.

We – one of the smallest and poorest country in Latin America – has stood to defend what we believe is our right – THE RIGHT TO FREEDOM. What do we get instead of support a total condemnation for our actions.

We hope that in the days to come the world comes around and realizes that we Hondurans for once have stood united by ourselves, for ourselves to fight for our country.

And as far as Mr. Obama comments – what else can you expect from a person that to a certain extent is center left?

Mel Zelaya acted like a spoiled child constantly
written by Marisol, June 29, 2009
Yesterday we felt anxiety and sadness while we were watching the international news interview the ex president, listening how he kept lying and acting innocent. You cannot imagine how relieved we feel that he was FINALLY removed from his position.

He has been acting like a spoiled child, not caring about the laws and doing whatever it took to get his way.

We resent his ties to Hugo Chavez, Ortega and Correa. We are a small and poor country, but we are proud to de Honduran and want to work hard for peace and it´s well being.

Please keep writting, to let the world now the truth!!
